Establishing the Connection between Peanut-shaped Bulges and Galactic Bars
نویسندگان
چکیده
It has been suggested that the peanut-shaped bulges seen in some edge-on disk galaxies are due to the presence of a central bar. Although bars cannot be detected photometrically in edge-on galaxies, we show that barred potentials produce a strong kinematic signature in the form of double-peaked line-of-sight velocity distributions with a characteristic “figure-ofeight” variation with radius. We have obtained spectroscopic observations of two edge-on galaxies with peanut-shaped bulges (NGC 5746 and NGC 5965), and they reveal exactly such line-of-sight velocity distributions in both their gaseous (emission line) and their stellar (absorption line) components. These observations provide strong observational evidence that peanut-shaped bulges are a by-product of bar formation. Letter to the Editor Hidden bars and boxy bulges
It has been suggested that the boxy and peanut-shaped bulges found in some edge-on galaxies are galactic bars viewed from the side. We investigate this hypothesis by presenting emission-line spectra for a sample of 10 edge-on galaxies that display a variety of bulge morphologies. To avoid potential biases in the classification of this morphology, we use an objective measure of bulge shape. Gene...

متن کاملThe Nature of Boxy/peanut-shaped Bulges in Spiral Galaxies
We present a systematic observational study of the relationship between bars and boxy/peanut-shaped (B/PS) bulges. We Ðrst review and discuss proposed mechanisms for their formation, focusing on accretion and bar-buckling scenarios. Using new methods relying on the kinematics of edge-on disks, we then look for bars in a large sample of edge-on spiral galaxies with a B/PS bulge and in a smaller ...
متن کاملThe Kinematic Signature of Face-On Peanut-Shaped Bulges
We present a kinematic diagnostic for peanut-shaped bulges in nearly face-on galaxies. The face-on view provides a novel perspective on peanuts which would allow study of their relation to bars and disks in greater detail than hitherto possible. The diagnostic is based on the fact that peanut shapes are associated with a flat density distribution in the vertical direction. We show that the kine...

Prompted by work on the buckling instability in barred spiral galaxies, much effort has been devoted lately to the study of boxy/peanut-shaped (B/PS) bulges. Here, we present new bar diagnostics for edge-on spiral galaxies based on periodic orbits calculations and hydrodynamical simulations. Both approaches provide reliable ways to identify bars and their orientations in edge-on systems. We als...
